Anime opened in Japan on July 16; opens in the US on January 14
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association named Mamoru Hosoda and Chizu studioit’s new BEAUTIFUL (Ryu to Sobakasu no Himeliterally “The Dragon and the Freckled Princess”), the animated film runner-up in this year’s Best Animation category on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association is a group of Los Angeles-area journalists who deliberated on the winning and runner-up films in a total of 14 categories.
GKIDS will begin screening the film in English and Japanese with English subtitles in the United States on January 14. The film will be screened in English and Japanese with English subtitles. There will be IMAX previews in select theaters starting January 12. GKIDS screened the film at Anime NYC 2021 event in November.
BEAUTIFUL opened in Japan on July 16. The film was screened in IMAX in 38 theaters across Japan. This makes BEAUTIFUL the first of Hosoda’s films to have IMAX screenings.
The film has grossed a cumulative total of 6,397,159,950 yen (about $56.44 million) as of October 10. The film is Hosoda’s highest-grossing film. MX4D screenings of the film began on October 22.
The Cannes Film Festival in France screened the film for the first time in the Cannes Premiere section of the festival on July 15. This was the first official festival selection for Hosoda. (The former director Mirai film screened at the Directors’ Fortnight, an independent section held alongside the festival, in 2018.) The film had its North American premiere at the New York Film Festival on September 25.
Hosoda (The girl who crossed time, summer wars, The boy and the beast, Mirailisten)) directed and wrote the film, and is also credited for the original work. The film marks Chizu studio10th anniversary. Taisei Iwasaki (Blood Blockade Battlefront, Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan, The Naked Director) is the musical director and composer of the film.
